"Japan and South Georgia, two ends of the extreme"
Never could there be such a contrast between two different expeditions. Setting off in 2004 Jeff Allen and Hadas Feldman attempted to circumnavigate the four main Islands of Japan, a journey that would be in excess of 6500 kilometers. Japan is a land of extremes, and 2004 was to prove one of their most extreme years ever with regards to typhoons striking the country, with very little cash or time to organise and prepare they labelled the expedition ‘On a wing and a prayer’. Incredibly they pulled it off.
The following year both Jeff and Hadas were a part of the first British team to successfully circumnavigate the remote Island of South Georgia, long considered to be the Ultimate challenge to Sea Kayakers anywhere.
The differences between these two amazing adventures could not be greater, come and listen to Jeff Allen as he talks you through two of the most incredible journeys by Sea kayak of the last ten years .
Jeff Allen
Jeff Allen is a BCU level 4 coach. In 2003 he established Sea Kayaking Cornwall, as an expedition and instructional based business, teaching and guiding around the South West Peninsular. In the same year Jeff decided to put some experience into his teaching and set off to the Far East, to attempt a circumnavigation of the Islands of Japan. This expedition was to last a total of six months and covered a distance in excess of 6500 kilometers.
In the following year (2005) Jeff was a member of the first British team to successfully circumnavigate the remote Antarctic Island of South Georgia, long considered to be the ultimate challenge within sea kayaking, the team set an incredible record time of 13 days and eight hours.
Returning to Cornwall Jeff entered into partnership with Simon Osborne and between them they run now Sea Kayaking Cornwall together, hosting expeditions and running courses in sea kayaking all around the world.
In March 2008 Jeff will be setting off on an expedition to attempt a circumnavigation of Scandinavia, this will also serve to highlight the needs of two charities, the ‘Ovarian Cancer Action’ and the ‘Children’s Hospice South West’.
